Therefore, Portland's status as a soccer city was not born because of the Portland Timbers (although they helped strengthen that status after they were founded), but because of Portland itself, especially their soccer field: Multnomah Fields .
On October 21, 1893, the first football game was recorded in an article in The Oregonian. The game was played at Multnomah Field, which later became the Portland Timbers' stadium called Providence Park.
Besides Multnomah Field and Providence Park, the stadium is also known as Multnomah Stadium, Civic Park, PGE Field, and Jeld-Wen Field. Before being a football stadium, this field was intended for athletics and multi-sport such as football, American football, greyhound racing and shooting.
At that time there was a football match between Portland and Astoria which started at 03.00 in the afternoon, with the final result being 5-0 in favor of Portland. Football was often confused with American football and rugby at that time, therefore there is no definitive record of when football entered newspaper articles other than what happened on October 21, 1893.
